Margaux graduate Merneith (American Pharoah) won Saturday’s G2 Santa Monica Stakes by 2-1/4 lengths under rider Edwin Maldonado. The four year old Bob Baffert trainee took down eight rivals in the seven furlong race, going 1:22.28.
After the race, Baffert said “she looks like American Pharoah to me. When she came in, she looked almost like a spitting image of him,” continuing “The (owner) in Dubai, I was telling him how high I was on this filly. Today is the day she finally showed what she has and that was a pretty tough field of horses that she beat. To win one-two-three, it was nice cheering down the lane.”
Prior to her winning effort on Saturday, Merneith had placed twice in as many graded stakes efforts. Her career earnings are now $367,900 with a record of 4-3-2 from 10 career starts.
Congratulations to all connections, including owner HRH Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud.
