Shirl's Speight Returns to Graded Stakes Form in G3 Tampa Bay S.

Margaux Training Grad SHIRL’S SPEIGHT returned to the Graded Stakes winner's circle, rallying home to win the G3 Tampa Bay S. going 1 1/16 miles on the grass at Tampa Bay Downs February 5.

Off for 11 months in 2021, he returned to the races at the end of his 4 YO year and geared up for a big 5 YO campaign. In his best late-running fashion, he flew home to win an allowance at Tampa Bay in January ahead of his return to Graded Stakes company.

Off at 9-1 in the G3 Tampa Bay S., he broke to the back of the pack as MGSW GET SMOKIN led the field through early fractions of :23.41 and :47.95. Finding a hole mid-stretch, he rocketed forward and overtook the leader to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

A homebred for Charles E. Fipke trained by Roger Attfield, the 5 YO son of SPEIGHTSTOWN is out of MGSW and millionaire PERFECT SHIRL, winner of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. This victory marks his second Graded Stakes victory and brings his earnings to $208,615.
