Five-year-old Lunar Surge had her first stakes victory on Valentine's Day in the $100,000 Maryland Racing Media S. at Laurel Park. After coming third in last year's race, the gray daughter of Malibu Moon came from last in a field of 10 to make a late running charge for the win. She took the 1 1/8 mile race in 1.52.41 under jockey Jose Ortiz.
“She broke well but got in trouble on the first turn. I had to relax her a bit so I took her back and she came out of it good,” Ortiz said. “I tried to save all the ground I could. I had an option to go four or six wide or wait and take a chance on rail. My move paid off. When I cut in and asked her for run, she took off.”
A Margaux Farm starting and training graduate, Lunar Surge is owned by Jim and Susan Hill and trained by Gearoge Weaver. She was purchased at the 2011 Keeneland September Sale for $155,000 from Woods Edge Farm Consignment.
