Mr Dumas Wins Stakes Debut in Commonwealth Turf

After starting his career sprinting on dirt, layup and training grad Mr Dumas seems to have found his calling going two turns on the grass, as demonstrated yesterday by his win in the G3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Mr Dumas tracked the pace early, before tipping out four wide and getting a jump on the closers in early stretch. Favored Tracksmith loomed on the outside, but Mr Dumas had enough left in reserve to hold him at bay, winning by half a length. The victory was extra sweet for trainer Johnny Ortiz, whose top runner Honey Bunny was recently retired and sold at the Keeneland November Sale.

Ridden by Joe Rocco Jr., for owners Hooties Racing LLC and WSS Racing LLC, the 3yo son of Majesticperfection banked $101,990 with the win, and pushed his record to 3-0-3 from 6 starts this season.
